For those unfamiliar with the story, a very brief summary:December 3, 1984, shortly after midnight, from a warehouse of the factory of Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL), a subsidiary of U.S. multinational Union Carbide specializes in the production of pesticides. in the Indian city of Bhopal leak 40 tonnes of methyl isocyanate, a chemical compound that looks like a clear, colorless liquid with a pungent odor, highly flammable, reactive and soluble in water. And of course with a high degree of toxicity.
The cloud killed 2,259 people in a short time and poisoned tens of thousands of others. The Madhya Pradesh government has confirmed a total of 3,787 deaths directly related to the event, but estimates of government agencies come to 15,000 in 2006 victims.A government affidavit alleges that the incident has caused damage detectable at 558,125 persons, of which approximately 3,900 are permanently disabled from severe level. As late as 2006, in the areas affected by the leakage of gas, the morbidity rate is 2.4 times higher than in other adjacent.
It is believed that the chemicals are still present in the complex abandoned, without any measures for remediation and containment, are continuing to pollute the surrounding area.
There are several civil and criminal trials still in progress, both among American Indian courts. They involve the UCIL, workers and former workers, the same multinational Union Carbide and Warren Anderson, its CEO at the time of the disaster, on which hangs from a July 2009 arrest warrant issued by Justice of India. In June 2010 a court in Bhopal issued a verdict of guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence against eight former executives of Indian UCIL (one of them now deceased), including Keshub Mahindra, then president. The sentence of the maximum provided for two years in prison and 100,000 rupees (about $ 2000) fine, was judged insignificant by activists and civil society. The convicts, freed bail under $ 500, has been appealed.
The book is widely available around and I would definitely recommend it .... news network on the Bhopal disaster also, if you want to read up a little more about this fact .....
This is the Wiki page, as a good starting point for the facts, but really I suggest you read the book ..... might lead you to make a lot of questions on the exploitation of developing countries, on safety at work on multinationals, sustainable development, the processes taking place on how "starved-
against-filthy rich "and many other boring things that we used radical chic to continue undeterred pissed like hyenas.
