There are things that happen in childhood that leave an indelible mark, for better or for worse .... and there are people who leave lasting impressions.
I had what, maybe 9 years? I do not remember exactly what happened, but my parents took me to a concert .... it was not the first that I saw, I had already seen many concerts of Italian singers, but this concert was different.
Meanwhile, I forget where it was .... Emilia, perhaps, but the place is not important ....
said the gentleman who sang things that I just do not understand.
I realized not much either of revolutions, workers, etc. struggles. (the recurring themes at the time .... it was in 1974), but he did not even speak Italian!
My first encounter with the English language, that after 36 years still sounds strange to me (don't enter into my head .... what can I do? Now the children begin to learn it in elementary school, I never study English language at school...)
But the music was beautiful, charming, and then that guy was funny .... he came with a strange costume, then he changed others, during the show .... well, I liked it so much, I was impressed ... . I asked who accompanied me about what the songs talked... the answer not so much convinced me (fairy tales, stories, legends, something like that ....) but it was equal fine .... I was so excited that finally my parents gave me the disc, some month after ... who is my age probably remind' the magic big blacks plates with nostalgia of vinyl, so delicate but so beautiful with great covers often opening, and inside them there was a world ...
That record, of course, I lost in some move, like so many other things .... I have always thought of buying it back at some Secondhand fair, but the original one is very expensive, I have the CD, certainly, but isn't the same thing ... then came YouTube and I saw the gentleman with the same costume, singing the same song ....
Genesis - Dancin' with the moonlit knight
Obviously, already long before the arrival of the Great World Wide Web and all its tools, the gentleman I had already revised many times ....
I knew he had left the group with which I had seen him (and I barely noticed them at the time ... I had been too impressed by him) after little more than one year from that epochal (for me) concert ...
I had heard them albums, and I had also heard all the other disks that they had made before and after he have done .... that group have become a fixture in my life.
Now I don't know exactly what they're doing the Genesis right now (I have a little lost them recently .... I found them unbearable in the last abums), but Mr. Gabriel I believe I have reviewed at least 30 other times since that concert, and I'm not exaggerating..... I have seen almost all the concerts he did in Tuscany and some other outside Italy, and since we are talking of a rather long period, probably the numer is the right one ... I don't remember all of them, I haven't so many working neurons .... but for sure every time Peter went here (ie, often), I'm going to listen ... even if he didn't sing more the songs of my childhood 'for many years, but there are many other beautiful songs (and some ugly one...ok, nobody is infallible ...) that I always listen with pleasure.
There's one I particularly like, especially for text ... speaks of political prisoners in Latin America (Chile, Argentina .... do you remember the Desaparecidos?), But it could be anywhere at any time, if we were at Guantanamo after the September 11, 2001 would be the same thing ... the Archangel does not
only talks about legends and fairy tales, and his music remains striking even when the words are hard ...
Wallflower
6x6 - from wall to wall
Shutters on the windows, no light at all
Damp on the floor you got damp on the bed
They're trying to get you crazy - get you out of your head
They feed you scraps and they feed you lies
To lower your defences, no compromise
Nothing you can do, they day can be long
You mind is working overtime, you body's not too strong
Hold on, hold on
They put you in a box so you can't get heard
Let your spirit stay unbroken, may you not be deterred
Hold on, you have gambled with your own life
And you face the night alone
While the builders of the cages
They sleep with bullets, bars and stone
They do not see your road to freedom
That you build with flesh and bone
They take you out - the light burns your eyes
To the talking room - it's not surprise
Loaded questions from clean white coats
Their eyes are all as hidden as their Hipppcratic Oath
They tell you - how to behave, he have as their guest
You want to resist them, you do your best
They take you to your limits, they take you beyond
For all that they are doing there's no way to respond
Hold on, hold on
They put you in a box so you can't get heard
Let your spirit stay unbroken, may you not be deterred
Hold on, you have gambled with your own life
And you face the night alone
While the builders of the cages
They sleep with bullets, bars and stone
They do not see your road to freedom
That you build with flesh and bone
Though you may disappear, you're not forgotten here
And I will say to you, I will do what I can do
You may disappear, you're not forgotten here
And I will say you you, I will do what I can do
And I will do what I can do
And I will do what I can do
I was lucky enough to hear him sing this song at a concert in Santiago, Chile in 2009, with Inti Illimani (do you know them?), one of the most exciting concerts I have ever seen...
Peter Gabriel with Inti Illimani - Wallflower
Thanks you to exist and to continue making music, Mr. Gabriel, and if next time you're in my country you wanted to ask "Can you tell me where my country lies?" ..... (I know it would not miss just ask, but what can I do ... some memories are not erased)
See you soon
An your fan.
